Enthusiasm in the Ashes

In the embers of burnout, her light waits for a kindred spark.
burned forest with eye looking in. Child stepping out of pupil.
“Enthusiasm in the Ashes” collage by Susan Nicolai

My friends and family know I’m one of those “rollercoaster” people. Filled with excitement, I pour myself into the next creative venture. They take that deep breath and hold it for a moment.

And I know what they are thinking, even though they don’t dare say.

“Here she goes again.”

“Another phase.”

“I wonder how long this will last?”

I’m not a quitter. But sometimes my heart gets stabbed so hard, it needs a break. You could call it burnout because there was a flame!

And, there still is.

But there might be a cycle in the cave of darkness.

A hibernation.

A cooling period.

This Cosmic Love Bomb is for all the friends who held my lantern when I was in that cave. Who reminded me that my energy was not wasted. That my enthusiasm was precious and holy. Worthy. And still wonderful.

Thank you.

Enthusiasm in the Ashes

Sometimes Enthusiasm goes quiet.
She curls up by the ashes,
waiting patiently
for someone to notice she’s still warm.

Life can be fierce.
Hard winds. Long winters.
Enthusiasm knows how to hibernate.

But there's an art to finding her.
To spotting the shimmer in the soot.

She often returns
in the sparkle of someone else’s eyes
when they speak of what they love.
In the breath they didn’t realize they were holding.
In the tiny laugh that escapes mid-story.

When we notice what lights someone up,
we belong to their joy.

We become part of the oxygen
that coaxes the coals back to life.

No fixing. No pushing.
Just the gift of presence.
Of seeing.
Of saying,
"I see you glowing."

Hold your gaze steady.
Breathe with love.
And their flame will remember how to rise.

Who will you witness today?

And if there’s someone you know who you’d like to remind that they bring joy, please share!
